We know that planning your Chistmas TV viewing schedule can be a stressful task so the Last Picture Show decided we would put together a list of our favourite picks on the box for the festive season.

Film picks

1. Avengers Assemble - Christmas Eve, 8.40pm, RTE1

The greatest decision Marvel studios made was hiring Joss Whedon to take on the monumental task of uniting the best of the superheroes in the universe. A great script, a brilliant cast and just some really good fun really separated this from the dark tone of the DC world.

2. The Searchers - Sunday, Channel 4, December 27th 11.25am

Arguably one of the best John Wayne performances, this Western is certainly one of the great classics. Wayne plays a Civil War veteran who embarks on a journey to rescue his niece from an Indian tribe. It may be on early in the morning but this is certainly worth recording.

The Best of TV at Christmas

Unbreakable - Monday, December 22nd, RTE One, 9.35pm

Mark Pollock began losing his sight in childhood and was fully blind by 22. However, he became a champion rower, attended TCD to study business and economics and triumphed as the first blind man to race to the South Pole. Trajedy struck when a fall left him paralysed in 2011. This documentary follows him as he tries to rebuild his life.

Mock the Week Christmas Special - Tuesday, December 23rd, BBCTwo, 10pm

On screen for ten years in 2015, Dara O Briain is joined by the usual suspects and some special guests with a look at the outtakes and stories from the year. The comedians also entertain with their best stories about going to casualty.

Downton Abbey Christmas Special - Thursday, Christmas Day, UTV, 9pm

Bates attempts to clear Anna's name while the family celebrate Christmas at Northumberland. This is always a good programme to watch on Christmas Day and this year the producers have promised it won't be filled with misery.

Man on Bridge - Sunday, December 28th, RTE One, 6.30pm

Man on Bridge tells the story of the great Arthur Fields who, from the 1930s to 1985, walked seven miles to work every day in order to take photographs on O'Connell bridge. It is believed that he took some 180,000 pictures and provided a priceless social history of the city.

Come Dine with Me, Christmas Special - Tuesday, December 30th, Channel 4, 7.05pm

The celebrity edition of the show includes meals prepared by Helen Flanagan, Kirsten O'Brien, Mark Dolan and Shaun Ryder. However, we all know who the real star of Come Dine with Me really is; narrator Dave Lamb. Get ready for some festival insults!

Hootenanny - NYE, BBC2, 11.20pm

Jools Holland party is now just part of the NYE celebrations! Ed Sheeran and Ronnie Spector are just two of the special guests on the music event of the year. If you are staying in for New Year's Eve, this is the programme that is worth watching.

Frozen at Christmas - Wednesday, New Year's Eve, Channel 4, 8pm

This programme is really for the fans as we hear from the makers about the film's creation, writing and performance of songs. More fun for parents who need psychiatric treatment for the amount of times they've had to listen to 'Let It Go',

David Attenborough's Conquest of the Skies - Thursday, New Year's Day, Sky 1, 7pm

The latest landmark series from David Attenborough will arrive on Sky 1 HD and Sky 3D this New Years Day, telling the story of nature's greatest aeronauts and the intricate engineering that has allowed them to conquer the skies. Attenborough follows the evolutionary process of how one billion birds learned to fly and begins with the planet's first flyers.

Pat Kenny, Out with the Old, in with the U - Thursday, New Year's Day, UTV Ireland, 8.30pm

Pat takes a look at the year ahead on the day of launch for the new station. The channel launches at 7.25pm with a look ahead for what viewers can expect.
