Ireland is having “the best week we’ve ever had” and is set to break records at the Paris Olympics, according to Ger Gilroy.

Team Ireland has won two Gold medals and two Bronze medals so far this Olympic season.

We’re also guaranteed to win at least a Bronze medal for Kellie Harrington in boxing.

This puts the country well on track to break its record for most medals won in a single Olympic season – currently six medals at the 2012 Games.

Off the Ball’s Ger Gilroy is in Paris for the Olympics – where the excitement for Irish Olympians is palpable.

“It's certainly it's the best week we've ever had in terms of the range of sports and the depth of talent that we have had performed,” he told The Anton Savage Show.

“Like the rowers must have been under intense pressure to go and deliver what they knew they could deliver, which was an absolutely dominant performance.

Daniel Wiffen was kind of the same in that he expected because he'd set world records... and actually his best event is the one that he's in the heats of this morning.

“He expects another Gold tomorrow.”

Ireland’s success this season started “unexpectedly”, according to Ger, with a win from Mona McSharry in the Women's 100-metre Breaststroke.

“I think she hoped she would win a medal, but didn't expect to,” Ger said.

“She won it by one-hundredth of a second from two other people.

“That jeopardy that was there where she could have finished fifth, she did finish third, that kind of just injected this whole sense of potential into the week.”

It was also a huge week for Irish rowing when Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy claimed Gold in the Men’s Rowing Lightweight Double Sculls.

This is Mr O’Donovan’s second Gold medal in a row and third overall, having won a silver medal in the 2016 Olympics.

This makes him the first Irish Olympian to win three medals in a row.

Mr O’Donovan and Mr McCarthy will also maintain the champion’s title for life as the Men’s Double Sculls will not return to the Olympics in 2028.

Ger noted that no athlete since Pat O’Callaghan has won back-to-back medals for Ireland.

“The last time that event will ever be in the Olympic Games, so their name goes in the history books,” he said.

Later today, gymnast Rhys McClenaghan will go for Gold in the pommel horse competition.

Kellie Harrington will also compete tonight at 9pm, boxing against Brazil’s Beatriz Soares Ferreira.

The Olympian has already secured at least a Bronze medal this year, but will be aiming higher tonight.
