Customers using Deutsche Bahn ‘Fahrkarten’ stations are being warned to be extra vigilant when using the self-service machines as some are at risk of exploding.
The unusual danger has arisen following the development by criminals of a unique method for robbing the machines. After the machine is sealed off using tape, it is filled with combustible gas. The thieves then trigger a small explosion, blasting the cash-filled machine open for plundering. Ten or more robberies have been carried out using the technique.
However, the risky method often does not work, leaving the sealed machine full of the gas. One such potential explosive device was discovered in the city of Karben earlier this week, with a bomb squad called in to remove the gas. BBC report there have been at least six similar failed attempts.
Customers are being warned to report any suspicious ticket machines as soon as they’ve safely vacated the area.
Deutsche Bahn have been forced to try and counter systemic crime on their lines. Earlier this week they announced they would be testing drone surveillance aircrafts in an attempt to stamp down on the rampant vandalism of their property.
