Over 30 vehicles seized as part of gangland crackdown in Dublin
Thousands of euro worth of high-powered cars have been seized during an investigation into the activities of criminal gangs in Dublin.
More than 60 gardaí, including armed detectives and staff from Revenue Customs Service, are involved in the operation which is targeting money laundering activities.
Shooter still at large after four police officers shot in New Zealand
Four police officers have been shot and injured in New Zealand during a siege at a remote rural property on the North Island.
One of the officers is in a serious condition in hospital, while three others are being treated for their injuries. They are in a stable condition.
They were hurt during an incident which developed into a siege situation, but which started when a police aircraft was shot at in the Otakiri, Bay of Plenty area.
In response, armed Police cordoned off a rural property about 70km from Rotorua where the three officers were injured.
Settlement made in Savita Halappanavar case
An out of court settlement has been made in a medical negligence case taken by Savita Halappanavar’s widower Praveen.
University Hospital Galway had previously apologised after a review found that “inadequate assessment and monitoring” contributed towards her death.
On October 21st 2012, Savita Halappanavar attended UHG complaining of back pain. She was 17 weeks pregnant with her first child and was told she was going to miscarry.
Dutch dentist accused of mutilating over 100 patients goes on trial
A dentist nicknamed "the butcher" by French media has appeared in court accused of mutilating more than 100 patients.
Jacobus Marinus (Mark) van Nierop arrived in a police car, his head covered by a blanket, in Nevers, near the town of Chateau-Chinon, where he began practising in 2008.
The 51-year-old faces charges of defrauding French social security and "wilful violence causing mutilation and permanent injury".
"Binary is a false idol" – 'Matrix' director Lilly Wachowski announces she is trans
Lilly Wachowski, born in 1967 as Andrew and half of the Wachowski siblings behind The Matrix trilogy, has revealed that she is a trans woman, after the British tabloid The Daily Mail threatened to publish a story outing her. Wachowski’s sister Lana also came out as trans in 2010.
In a statement, Lilly Wachowski writes about how concerned she has been that she would see the headline “Sex change shocker – Wachowski brothers now sisters!!!” splashed across the Internet, leading her to write an open letter to journalists which she describes as “one part piss, one part vinegar and 12 parts gasoline.”
