Croatia closes border crossings as it struggles to cope with refugee flow

Croatia has closed seven of the eight road border crossings it shares with Serbia - as police struggle to cope with the huge influx of migrants and refugees.

More than 11,000 people have entered the country since Wednesday, when Hungary completed a razor-wire fence to keep the flow of migrants under control.

Last night, Croatia's Prime Minister insisted his government does not have the resources to hold back those who want to travel on to Western Europe, and the nation's army is now on alert.

Noonan wants review of mortgage caps for first-time buyers

The Finance Minister has indicated he'd like to see a review of the Central Bank's mortgage caps for first-time buyers.

In an interview with the Irish times, Michael Noonan says there's a shortage of starter homes in Dublin and builders believe the regulations by the bank are too restrictive.

He says market conditions are changing and he's being told by the construction industry that aspects of it are inhibiting starter homes.

Britain's new shadow chancellor apologises for saying IRA members should be "honoured"

John McDonnell, controversially appointed as Shadow Chancellor of the British Labour Party by Jeremy Corbyn this week, has apologised for saying IRA members should be "honoured".

Confronted on TV, the left-wing Labour MP said his comments, made in 2003, had clearly caused offence and he apologised "from the bottom of my heart".

The new Shadow Chancellor, who has been under fire since his appointment over previously speaking about the "bravery" of the IRA, said he had been urging militants to "put their weapons away".

75 new jobs for across the country today

75 new jobs are being created across the country today in two separate announcements.

25 high tech software positions are being created at Hire Lab in Cork - to work on the jobsireland.ie website.

The project was put out to tender by the Department of Social Protection.

Meanwhile, 50 new positions are being created at Data Management company Asystec.

Minibus with schoolchildren on board crashes in Co Tipperary

Gardai are investigating after a minibus with children on board crashed into a car in Co Tipperary yesterday evening, Tipp FM report.

It happened at around 5.30 at Whitelands, New Inn.

Emergency services including two units of the fire brigade attended the scene.
