On the day that Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has raised the issue that the majority of housework still continues to fall to the women in Irish homes, the position of mothers in the workplace has The Right Hook thinking.
As it currently stands, Irish mothers who have given birth within the previous six months are entitled to take time off work every day in order to breastfeed. A 60-minute break is offered to women, and means that these women are legally entitled to have their working hours reduced in order to express milk.
While employers are not obliged to provide a space in the workplace to facilitate a mother’s right to breastfeed, they are not allowed to dock pay.
A number of EU leaders are arguing that one hour is not enough, and that, as is the case in Norway, all women across the 28-member states should legally be entitled to a second hour of paid breaks for breastfeeding.
