On today’s Right Hook, George and his panel of guests (Ciara Kelly, Shane Coleman and Dave McIntyre) looked ahead to this weekend’s Oscars. And what better way to do it than by looking back at some previous winners of the Best Song.
The prize, introduced at the seventh Academy Awards’ ceremony in 1934, has a mixed history, having snubbed some of the greatest songs ever written to honour some of the worst. But what ones did The Right Hook panel pick and why?
George Hook – The Theme from Shaft by Isaac Hayes, Shaft, 1971
After my daughter Michelle was born in The Rotunda, I went across the street to watch Shaft in The Savoy. Sadly, I missed the naked shower scene because I fell asleep.
Ciara Kelly – Let it Go by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez, Frozen, 2014
For me it is the great coming out anthem of our age.
Shane Coleman – Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on my Head by Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969
I'm a huge Hal David/Burt Bacharach fan and this is song is very much in keeping with the catchy, three minute pop song that they specialised in. It's from a great film and I also love the sentiment in the song: the huge positivity; that sense that you keep going regardless of what's thrown at you. It would be a great motto for life. And finally, this song will always have a special place in my heart because my little girl, Aoibhinn, loves dancing to it.
Dave McIntyre – Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová, Once, 2007
I remember the joy with which the Oscar win was received over here due to the Irish connection. And the story of Hansard and Irglova, and how they came across in all their interviews afterwards, it was one of those feel good stories. It was also the day after Ireland had hammered England in that historic game at Croke Park.
