The trial of the former Papal butler will resume later today.
Paolo Gabriele is accused of stealing sensitive documents which were subsequently published in a book.
Gabriele faces up to 4 years in prison if he is found guilty of aggravated theft.
He claims he wanted to draw the attention of the Holy See to improper practices within the Church.
He is accused of stealing private letters from Papal apartments and giving them to a journalist.
The correspondence is claimed to lay bare some of the darkest secrets in the Vatican.
Vatican police arrested him on allegations of having leaked confidential documents and letters from the private study of the Pontiff back in May.
The Vatican said he had been caught in possession of secret documents.
In April the Pope set up a special commission of cardinals to probe the leaks which began in January.
Rome Correspondent with The Irish Times is Paddy Agnew.
He told Breakfast here on Newstalk there is no indication that the documents were released for monetary gains.
