The Justice Minister says there is no truth to the rumours of terrorist training camps in Ireland.
Frances Fitzgerald said there are no terrorist training camps, as was suggested by newspaper reports last weekend. Reports claimed foreign intelligence agencies had become aware of training camps for potential Islamist fighters taking place in Leinster.
“There is no truth in relation to that and there is no information that would suggest any specific threat at present,” she said.
“If people are considered in any way to be a threat to the security of the state clearly there is very careful monitoring and information exchange and planning in relation to that," she added.
Ms Fitzgerald was speaking ahead of a meeting with the Garda Commissioner and Taoiseach on ongoing Justice matters.
She added that all European countries are concerned about security in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris last week.
Yesterday, Ms Fitzgerald said there is no “specific information” to suggest a terrorist threat to Ireland
She briefed Cabinet colleagues yesterday morning on issues arising following last week’s attacks in Paris, and following a call made to the Intel plant in Kildare, claiming a bomb was planted on the premises. The caller claimed to be from the Islamic State group. Gardai said the threat was credible.
Ms Fitzgerald said the “small few” in Ireland who might attempt to facilitate terrorist activity will be monitored.
Last year, Ms Fitzgerald told an Oireachtas committee that roughly 30 Irish people had travelled to Middle East conflict zones since the Arab Spring, some of them to fight.
