Wearing team jerseys when you're out and about is only acceptable for casual plans.
That's according to stylist Laura Mullett, who said the issue can be a difficult one to approach.
She told The Hard Shoulder it really depends on the situation.
"They say style is a way of saying who you are without speaking," she said.
"In the early stages of a relationship, if someone rocks up constantly in the same jersey there's questions being asked: Does this person change their clothes? Is this their only personality trait?
"I think it just depends [on the situation].
"If someone's going to Nandos and the cinema, both parties might throw on whatever they want.
"Jerseys are lightweight, they feel comfortable, it makes sense on paper.
"But I think if you're going somewhere nice, a sense of occasion is so important.
"It adds to to romance for both parties to kind of match the same energy".
Ms Mullett said this can be particularly the case for women.
"There's so much effort involved: you're trying to find a dress, you're trying to tan your legs, put your makeup on," she said.
"I think it is lovely, depending on where the meal is, for both parties to feel nice and look nice, and be on the same level".
For a casual look, Ms Mullett said the rules are a bit less rigid.
"I do think in terms of these retro jerseys, some of them are really cool," she said.
"I love basketball jerseys as well, I think they can be quite funky, men and women love those - but only casually.
"Unless you're going to a match or having casual plans, I do think jerseys can kind of communicate this lack of energy or lack of thought," she added.
