An Irish version of the popular TV show 'The Traitors' is heading our way.

It follows the success of similar versions in the Netherlands, the US and the UK.

Traitors Ireland has been described as a psychological game of deception, trust and betrayal.

The show pits 22 strangers against each other in a remote castle where they must play a game of strategy.

Some players, however, are secretly tasked with eliminating a player every night without getting caught to win prize money of up to €50,000.

Content creator and reality TV fanatic Padraig Wilson McCarthy told Moncrieff this is a different kind of reality TV.

"It's a very new concept, it only started in 2021 and it originated in the Netherlands," he said.

"Very quickly it was adopted by the BBC - they did their first series in 2022 - they're two series in and they've already teased a celebrity version.

"Then last year the US took it over as well so it's gone completely global.

"If you're not even into reality TV... this is completely different.

"There's an element of this where it really is a game."

'Nobody knows which role you are'

Mr McCarthy said each player is assigned to be either a traitor or a faithful.

"The objective is for the traitors - they've got secret meetings every night - [to] choose one person to eliminate," he said.

"Throughout the day there's challenges and everyone comes together - nobody knows which role you are.

"At the end of every day there's a roundtable discussion where people air their suspicions and they try to find who the traitors are.

"The aim is to eliminate the traitors so that you get the money - but of course if the traitor is a good enough liar they can carry it straight through to the end".

Mr McCarthy said it's unknown who the Irish host will be - with Claudia Winkleman leading the UK version and Alan Cumming presenting the US version.

"He's actually won an Emmy for his role in this, so we're going to need someone iconic," he added.

Among presenters being suggested online are Anne Doyle, Deirdre O'Kane, Angela Scanlon and Maura Higgins.
