Life under lockdown made a big impression on this year’s top Google searches – with Irish people keen to learn how to make things like face masks, hand sanitizer and baked goods.
The demise of Donald Trump was the big event of the year, with the US election topping the overall search list and Joe Bien the most searched for person.
President Trump came fifth on the people list – with Irish people more interested in searching Mr Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un and This Morning presenter Philip Schofield.
The coronavirus came second on the overall search list, with Caroline Flack coming in third and the Premier League coming in fourth.
Lockdown made it biggest mark on the ‘How To’ list with people wondering how to make face masks, hand sanitiser, scones, banana bread and cookies.
They also wondered how to cut their own hair, cancel their COVID payments and get tested for the virus.
The top ‘What Is’ searches included Level Three restrictions, a pandemic, 5G and TikTok.
With nowhere to go for large portions of the year many people turned to TV for entertainment and one show came out head and shoulders above the others on the search engine.
The adaption of Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People was the show that got people Googling, with the Queen’s Gambit and Love Island also getting people talking.
When it came to recipes, 2020 was a baker’s paradise with people searching for ways to make brown bread, scones, pizza dough, apple tart and soda bread.
The most popular cocktail recipes were Strawberry Daiquiris and Margaritas.
