'Keriba Omasker' is the title of the memorial service, and translates as 'our children'.

The mother of seven of the children has been charged with their murders - the other victim was her niece. 37-year-old Mersane Warria is still being treated in hospital.

The victims were aged between 18 months and 14-years-old.

The house is expected to be demolished and a permanent memorial built on the site.

The family were members of the Torres Strait Islander community, a group of indigenous Australians viewed as distinct from the broader Aboriginal community due to their origins on islands off the Queensland coast.

Last month, Tony Abbott described the deaths as "heartbreaking".

He added: "All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime."
