Septic tank registration fees have been paid for over a quarter of a million properties around the country so far.

That's according to the Local Government Management Agency.

The payment rates vary widely among counties, with the figures showing 26 per cent paid up in Donegal, but up to 81 per cent in Kerry.

A total of nearly 500 thousand water treatment systems are covered by the regulation.
