Twitters users experienced problems earlier today as the social media site appeared to crash.

The company says people experienced issues accessing the site.

It said engineers were working to resolve the issue.

Users who attempted to log on were greeted by a message saying “Twitter is currently down for <%= reason %>”.

The site went down at about 5pm Irish time and was back up by 7:15pm.

Mobile devices were affected for a time but were back working before the main site.

A similar problem happened back in June when the website was down for around an hour.

The latest crash comes just a day before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games at which on-line traffic is expected to increase.
