Thousands of Australians flee homes to escape severe bushfires

Thousands of Australians have had to flee their homes to escape severe bushfires.

Police have declared a major emergency and told people in parts of South Australia and Victoria that their lives are at risk.

South Australia's fire chief says the bushfires are the worst since Ash Wednesday in 1983 - when 75 people died.

The Guardian reports that the worst of the wildfires has been in the Adelaide Hills, and has resulted in seven homes being destroyed.

South Australia's premier Jay Weatherill has warned "there should be no sense of relief because the temperatures are somewhat lower, or that there are spots of rain about. The situation remains extremely dangerous and our warnings that were issued earlier today must be heeded."
