Some 3,500 people demonstrated against the government's intention to sell off harvesting rights to Coillte's forests.

The "walk in the forests" surrounding Parnell's ancestral home, Avondale in Co.Wicklow was organised by the Woodland League.

Actor Jeremy Irons, along with poets and musicians including Christy Moore addressed the crowds.
