Around 40,000 women from across the country took part in the 10k race- with the majority doing it for charity.

Meanwhile, the Irish Cancer Society says it is delighted with the level of support it received during today's event in Dublin.

The National Campaigns Officer, with the Irish Cancer Society Liz Logan says the women taking part on 'team Irish Cancer Society' are helping to fund counselling in local cancer support centres around the country.

Meanwhile, family and friends of murdered Jill Meagher ran the mini-marathon today in the capital, to raise funds for the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

The 29 year old died last September after she went missing from a suburb of Melbourne.

A man has been charged with her rape and murder and will appear in court on June 11th in Melbourne.

Olympians Rob and Marian Heffernan and the Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor, John Buttimer lead 8,000 athletes at the Cork City marathon.
