The Greek government has offered no official response to Germany's rejection of the country's latest debt-deal proposal - but high-ranking Greek officials have told Reuters that they were surprised by the Germany's reaction - and that the only options available to the Eurogroup tomorrow are to accept or reject the deal on the table.

They questioned whether officials had time to fully contemplate the request before releasing the statement rejecting it.

The German finance ministry said that the Greek's letter had failed to "meet the criteria agreed by the Eurogroup on Monday."

Reuters also report that the Greeks did not appreciate comments from former-French president Valery Giscard d’Estaing who said that it was "evidently a mistake" to allow the Greeks to join the common currency, and that the country should now make a "friendly exit" from the monetary union.

One Greek official told the news-agency that the intervention was "less than helpful at such a sensitive time" - and that - "Old leaders should learn to shut up."

Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s said today that a Greek exit from the euro would have a limited contagion risk.

EU commission president Jean-Claude Juncker on the other hand welcomed the Greek proposal, saying that it could lead to a "sensible compromise in the interest of financial stability in the Eurozone as a whole."

The euro zones finance ministers will meet tomorrow in Brussels at 14:00 GMT.
