Three Ireland has become the latest telecoms firm to launch a 5G network.

Three's 5G network will initially cover 35% of the population, before being expanded in early 2021.

It will be available on both prepay and bill pay.

Prepay customers on the network's €15, €20 and €30 plans will be able to access 5G for a €5 add-on.

Some bill pay customers will have 5G included in their plan already, while others will have the option of a €5 add-on.

The company claims 5G will offer download speeds 'on average 5-10 times faster' than a typical 4G connection.

Speaking to Newstalk's Jess Kelly, Three's CTO David Hennessy said their initial coverage is "spread around the country, and we're launching with services in every county".

"In terms of plans, we're including 5G in our top-end plans. People on the €80 or €60 [bills] will automatically have 5G, as long as they have a 5G compatible device.

"Between and Christmas, we'll be extending our 5G portfolio to 15 handsets."

The network says it is offering a number of 5G phones, including the Samsung S20 Ultra, Samsung S20 Plus, Samsung S20 5G, Huawei Mate Xs 5G and Huawei P40 Pro 5G.

Three joins Eir and Vodafone in offering a high-speed mobile data network in Ireland.

Today's launch comes after a network failure left many Three customers without internet service for several hours yesterday - with the network last night saying the issues had been resolved.
