The 73-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the aggravated burglary at his in home in Skreen, County Sligo on January 18th.
This afternoon, Gardaí said they had arrested three men – one in his 50s, one in his 30s and one in his 20s.
They are being held at separate Garda stations in the Sligo and Leitrim areas.
Mr Niland was left with serious head and upper body injuries after the attack, during which a sum of money was stolen.
The pensioner was living alone but was able to crawl to the roadside and alert passing drivers on the N59.
Gardaí investigating the case previously said they'd recovered significant evidence, which was described by Mr Niland’s family as “brutal and savage”.
