'Desperate times'
The overnight events in Drogheda follow two petrol bomb attacks in the Co Louth town in the early hours of Saturday morning.
On Thursday afternoon a gunman opened fire at a house at Hardman's Gardens, wounding a man in the shoulder and leg.
The latest events have led to fresh concerns that the situation in Drogheda is spiraling out of concern.
A local TD is warning that criminal gangs are turning the north east into the 'Wild West'.
Speaking yesterday evening, Fianna Fáil's Declan Breathnach explained that the illegal drugs trade and feuding between rival criminal gangs are causing terror in the community.
He observed: "It's just unacceptable - we're reaching a stage in the north-east where these drug gangs need to be tackled.
"Every attempt has been made by An Garda Síochana, and they need more public support in that respect."
He is calling for additional mandatory sentencing and tighter bail laws to deal with the spike in crime, suggesting "desperate times sometimes require desperate measures".
