All MEP seats in the Midlands North West constituency have been filled.

Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness was already elected at the weekend, topping the poll on the first count.

Independent Luke 'Ming' Flanagan was elected on Wednesday evening on 121,824 votes.

While Fine Gael's Maria Walsh and Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy were both deemed elected without reaching the quota.

Peter Casey was eliminated in the final count on 78,632 votes.

But Mr Casey has said he is not done with politics - and plans to run for a Dáil seat in Co Donegal when a general election is called.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Mr Flanagan said he believed the former presidential candidate had no chance.

"I have opinions on lots of things in this world and fortunately I don't have to have an opinion on that man now - because he is now irrelevant," he said.

It comes as Fianna Fáil's Billy Kelleher was elected as an MEP in Ireland South.

He got over 130,000 votes following the 17th count - becoming the second candidate to reach the quota after Fine Gael's Sean Kelly on Tuesday.

Independent Mick Wallace is expected to take the third seat.

Fine Gael's Deirdre Clune, Sinn Féin's Liadh Ni Riada and the Green Party's Grace O'Sullivan appear to be in a battle for the remaining two seats.

Four Dublin candidates have been elected: Ciarán Cuffe, Frances Fitzgerald, Clare Daly and Barry Andrews.

However Mr Andrews will only be able to take up his seat if and when the UK leaves the EU.
