Met Éireann meteorologist Jean Byrne said: "[Temperatures will be] at least 26 degrees... they could be 27, 28 and 29.
"Even a 30 isn't out of the question, but that would be in only one or two isolated locations."
However, a status yellow weather warning has been issued for the entire country for this afternoon and evening.
Met Éireann says heavy thunderstorms are expected later today and tonight, with some severe downpours, hail and spot flooding.
However, they say some places will remain dry due to the "localised nature of thunderstorms".
Ms Byrne said: "The heat could spark off and will spark off some heavy and thundery showers later today, continuing into tonight."
Met Eireann noted that this is likely the peak of the hot weather for the foreseeable future.
