A 24-year-old hurler from Tipperary has died following his collapse on the pitch yesterday evening.
Dillon Quirke collapsed during a senior championship game against Kilruane McDonagh in Thurles.
Emergency services attended to Quirke on the pitch in FBD Semple Stadium, after which he was brought to Tipperary University Hosipital, where he later died.
Quirke played right half back for the team. A skilled hurler, Quirke has previously won a minor all-Ireland medal and an under-21 all-Ireland medal.
Tipperary County Board paid tribute to the young sportsman in a statement.
“Tipperary GAA extends its heartfelt and sincere sympathies to Dan, Hazel, Shannon, Kellie and the extended Quirke family."
"Also, to the Clonoulty Rossmore GAA Club and his teammates on the sad and tragic passing of Clonoulty Rossmore and Tipperary hurler Dillon Quirke."
“Dillon became ill during Friday evening’s County Senior Hurling Championship game between Clonoulty Rossmore and Kilruane MacDonaghs in Semple Stadium and was taken to Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel where he passed away."
“Tipperary GAA wish to thank all those who attended to Dillon in Semple Stadium and in Tipperary University Hospital this evening.”
