Twitter has been gaining momentum and strength each day since it was launched on July 15h, 2006. The micro-blogging site now claims to have over 500 million users.
Social media is unavoidable and inevitable in every aspect of our lives from reading newspapers, watching the news and even listening to the radio.
The most striking statistic is that people who have never Tweeted or used a hash tag in 140 characters or less believe Tweeters are self obsessed, boring stalkers.
BT (before Twitter) one could watch their favourite TV programme in peace. Now people feel the need to use social media as a secondary medium to compliment one another.
According to a report published by Ericsson people want to use social media while watching television for the following reasons:
- To gain a sense of belonging to a community
- They do not want to watch their programmes alone
- To find out new information
- To get their point across and influence content
- Enjoyment of being having your opinions recognised by others
- To certify their thoughts in a public sphere
- Future analysis/change on a particular subject
62 % of individuals are now using Twitter and Facebook to engage with others while watching the box.
Taking all of this on board we decided compile a list of Ireland’s top Tweeters as of today August, 30th 2012.
