1. Steps will be taken to reign in spending at the Department of Health says Taoiseach
The Taoiseach says immediate steps will be taken to reign in spending at the department of Health. Figures show that the HSE had a deficit of 281 million euro at the end of May. The Troika has ordered the government to bring the health budget back in line. But Sinn Fein says the health budget cannot sustain any more cuts, and it wants ministers to tell the Troika to back off. Taoiseach Enda Kenny says every effort will be made to minimise the effect of the cuts on frontline patient services.
2. 22-year-old man accused of stabbing a tourist at the Swedish House Mafia remanded in custody
A 22-year-old man accused of stabbing a tourist at the Swedish House Mafia concert in the Phoenix Park last Saturday has been further remanded in custody. Raymond Donnan, with an address at Greenfort Crescent, Clondalkin, Dublin is charged with 5 offences. Raymond Donnan was arrested last Saturday night and was subsequently charged with public order offences, violent disorder and producing a knife at the Swedish House Mafia concert. He’s also accused of assault causing harm to 28-year-old Andrew England ”“ a tourist from the Isle of Man. It’s alleged he was stabbed several times after going to the assistance of a girl involved in an altercation. The 22 year old accused today made his second court appearance at Cloverhill District Court and was furhter remanded in custody until August 3rd. Our Courts Correspondent Francesca Comyn reports:
3. Gardaí are investigating an aggravated burglary at a house in Wicklow
A man and a woman were tied up and assaulted during the robbery – which happened in Bray in the early hours of this morning. Sometime between half past two and half past three this morning, three armed and masked men broke into the house at Rocky Valley in Bray. Armed with a hatchet and crow bars, the men tied up the man and woman – both of whom were assaulted. They made off with a number of items – including paintings and jewellery. The raiders wore balaclavas and gloves and spoke with Dublin accents – two are described as being between 5’ 10” and 6’ tall. The third was around six foot five inches tall. Gardai at Bray are anxious to speak to anyone who saw anything unusual in the area at the time of the incident – particularly anyone who may have seen a silver Fiat Punto and a silver Nissan Primera. 4. An inquest into the death of a Cork toddler who died in a road crash in England is due to take place on Monday
Oisin Twomey from Meelin lost his life when the car in which he was travelling was hit by an oncoming car last Friday. His unborn sister Elber Marie also died in the tragic collision while his parents Con and Elber remain in a critical condition in hospital. The inquest will also cover the death of the driver of the other car – a 26-year old Polish national. Police in the UK are carrying out a number of investigations into the horror smash.
5. John Terry has been found not guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand
The Chelsea and England footballer has spent the week on trial accused of hurling an insult at the QPR player during a match last year. There were loud cheers from the public gallery when the chief magistrate announced his verdict. Sky’s Martin Brunt is at Westminster Magistrates Court and says Terry left without commenting.
