Overall tax take is almost one per cent or €271 million ahead of target for the year at €36.646 billion.

The figure is 7.7% or over 2.6 billion euro ahead of the 2011 tax receipts.

VAT and coporation tax outperformed expectations while income tax and excise duties recorded shortfalls but not as low as had been forecast.

The report says expenditure for 2012 is in line with targets at just under €45 billion with overspends in the Departments of Health and Social Protection offset to a large extent by savings in other areas.

It means the Exchequer deficit at the end of 2012 stood stands at €14.8 billion.

The Finance Union, the IBOA, is to meet with senior management at Ulster Bank next week.

The bank announced earlier that it's to close 20 of its branches in the coming months. 

The union wants clarity on which branches are to shut and how many staff will be effected. 

Last year, Ulster bank said it would be seeking 950 redundancies, with 500 earmarked for the retail division.

Police in the North investigating the death of a Monaghan student have arrested a third person. 

19 year old Jason McGovern was found dead at a friend's house on New Years Eve after being attacked at two different pubs in Omagh in Co. Tyrone, the night before.

A 17 year old boy was detained in Omagh earlier today. 

A 21 year old man arrested yesterday has been released without charge.

However, an 18 year old man who was also arrested yesterday remains in Police custody.

McKeever died yesterday after being struck by lightening as he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 42 year old was leading a group of Irish hikers when he died.

Enda Kenny says he came to know Ian McKeever over recent years and admired him not only for his own achievements and charity work, but also for his work with young people in challenging them to achieve their full potential.
