The Health Minister says he does not know what was in Roisin Shortall’s head for her to claim he was guilty of stroke politics and not adhering to the Programme for Government.

James Reilly has spoken out after his former junior minister went on radio to criticise him at the weekend.

He’s rejected calls for a fresh Dáil statement and says it is insulting to his constituents in North Dublin for Ms Shortall to say the only way they could get primary care centres was through stroke politics.

Minister Reilly says he does not know what Roisin Shortall’s motivation was:

The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin wants parents to stop extravagant spending on their children’s first holy communion.

The Dublin Archdiocese has today launched a new policy aimed at cutting costs, and simplifying first holy communion day.

The policy also means parents will have to attend a number of Sunday masses before their children can receive the sacrament.

Dr Diarmuid Martin says excessive spending to cover the cost of first holy communion is wrong:

Europe’s economics chief Olli Rehn says the EU is ready to act if Spain needs a bailout.

It comes amid rising expectations that Spain will request financial aid with the country’s cost of borrowing set to escalate.

The Irish government will be closely watching any deal offered to Spain with the likelihood that a similar package will be offered to Ireland.

Tara Duggan has the details:

The funeral of Irish woman Jill Meagher – who was murdered after a night out in Melbourne – will take place this Friday.

The service will be a private family affair in Melbourne.

Her remains are to be cremated and taken back to Perth where her parents say she spent many happy years.

A memorial Mass will also be held in Drogheda on Friday evening so that she can be remembered on both sides of the world.

Her father’s family, the McKeon’s and her mother’s family, the Scott’s from Boyle in County Roscommon will be there as will members of the family of her husband, Tom Meagher.

Jill’s family say that mass will be open to everyone who wishes to remember the young woman.
