Police sources in Australia say they expect to charge a 41 year old man with the murder of Jill Meagher – an Irish woman who’s been missing in Melbourne since last weekend.
She has still not been found.
The man – who it’s understood was the person seen on CCTV footage wearing a blue hoodie and following Jill – was arrested in the Coburg area of Melbourne earlier today.
Reporter with the city’s 3AW radio station – Lauren Hilbert – says a special court sitting is being arranged for later today:
The Labour TD Alex White has been appointed new junior Health Minister in place of Roisin Shortall.
The Labour TD – who’s been at odds recently with Health Minister James Reilly – stepped down last night.
Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein say the suitability of Dr Reilly in that role must be questioned – following Roisin Shortall’s resignation.
But the Taoiseach is resisting calls on him to reconsider the appointment of the Health Minister.
Enda Kenny also dismissed claims that Minister Reilly is creating chaos across the health service:
The Sinn Féin President says he can’t afford to sue over allegations that he was a commanding officer in the I-R-A.
In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, Dolores Price made several allegations about Gerry Adams – including a claim that he was a central figure in the IRA in the early 1970s.
Amid calls for him to make a Dáil statement on the issue, Gerry Adams says he has “no case to answer”.
And he says he can’t afford to try and stop Dolores Price from making the claims:
5,000 teachers were overpaid last year to the tune of 1.2 million euro.
The government spending watchdog has criticised the Department of Education for the blunder in it’s annual report.
The Comptroller and Auditor General also finds that over 500 government contracts were awarded last year without competition.

Two men remain in custody this evening, after gardai discovered a surveillance operation on one of the biggest garda stations in the capital.

/> Officers raided a hotel room which overlooks Harcourt Square in the city center – and found cameras and other equipment.
The men – aged 32 and 41 – are suspected of being members of an unlawful organisation.
