The Government rejecting criticism of its new stimulus plan which it says will create 13 thousand new construction jobs.

The 2.2 billion euro investment in public infrastructure projects will see new roads built in Wexford, Kilkenny and Galway.

Six new schools will be constructed in Cork, Clare, Kildare and Louth, while the DIT will finally gets its new single campus at Grangegorman in Dublin.

Opposition parties however say there’s no long term benefit from short term construction jobs.

But Minisiter Brendan Howlin disagrees.

The Taoiseach says the government will reflect on today’s supreme court judgement paving the way for two unsuccessful bidders to challenge the granting of the second mobile phone licence to Esat Digifone.

Comcast and Persona Digital Telephony have previously sought millions in damages alleging fraud, conspiracy, deceit and corruption.

Both companies have today been given leave to launch challenges against the State, Esat Digifone and its former chairman Denis O’Brien.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the government will read the full judgement of the Supreme Court before making giving a formal response to the judgement.

A man’s being questioned about an armed raid during which a post office worker was injured last week.

The female staff member was hit in the face by shrapnel after a shot was fired during the attempted robbery at the Bunting Road post office in Dublin’s Walkinstown last Friday.

Gardai had been searching for two men in connection with the raid.

Today a man in his 20′s was arrested in Dublin and is now being held for questioning at Terenure Garda Station.

Victims of last month’s flash flooding in Cork can apply to a 10 million euro hardship fund for assistance.

Dozens of homes and businesses in the city and county were flooded at the end of June – with the Clonakility, Glanmire, Douglas and Blackpool areas worst affected.

The Government today agreed to open the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme – set up after previous flooding in Dublin and Galway – to householders in Cork.

The Social Protection Minister Joan Burton says the fund provides hardship alleviation rather than full compensation:

Half a million households have yet to upgrade their television signal ahead of the digital switchover.

The majority of the households that still have to switch over are in rural Ireland.
