Dublin.
It is the 55th anniversary of the Dublin Theatre Festival, running from September 27th to October 14th. This weekend you can see four plays and a night-time live art display.
The Dubliners, an adaptation of James Joyce’s short stories, is showing in the Gaiety Theatre. It is a portrayal of Dublin City life for the price of €10 – €35.
Public Face III will light up the Dublin sky for two weeks. A neon smiley face, visible for several kilometers, will read the expressions of passers-by. If Dublin City is happy, the face will smile. If not – it will either frown or shine with an indifferent grimace.
Talk of the Town is showing at the Project Arts Centre. It tells the story of Irish writer, Maeve Brennan, who made her mark in New York writing stories about home. Tickets are €25-€30.
The Select (The Sun Also Rises) will perform their theatrical version of one of Hemmingway’s classics in the O’Reilly Theatre, Belvedere. Tickets are €30-€35.
Everyone is King Lear in His Own Home is showing in the Smock Alley Theatre for €15-€25. Shakespeare’s famous play is re-invented.
Cork
Noise Weekender is on at Triskel Arts Centre. It showcases the best of new music: Dead Skeletons, No Spill Blood, Windings and more. Weekend tickets are €25.
Mundy is playing at 8pm in Coughlan’s on Saturday and Cry Monster Cry & guests are playing in Fred Zepplins for free on Sunday at 8pm.
A Night in November is showing in The Everyman on Saturday Tickets are €20 for this play following Kenneth, an Ulster Protestant, who starts to question his beliefs at a world cup match between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Galway
The World Oyster Opening Championship is on Saturday from 12-7pm at the festival marquee in Galway harbour. Tickets are €70 for live music, celebrity guests and an international food village.
Three venues will host an Oyster Festival Mardi Gras through the streets on Saturday night. Tickets are €95 and masks are optional.
On Sunday, the Oyster Festival marquee will run family activities, cooking challenges and live music shows. Tickets are €15 and kids under twelve go free.
Jerry Fish is playing the Roisín Dubh on Saturday for €18. All proceeds of his Irish sales this year will go to Barretstown. Children’s charity.
Conan Gallen – Laugh Out Loud is showing in the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday for €25. It promises to be “one of the funniest shows you will ever see.”
