The public expenditure minister Brendan Howlin says he’s been advised that he cannot block pay rises for high paid public servants.

Around 500 public service workers earning over €100,000 are due to get incremental pay rises this year.

Opposition parties want the government to use legislation to stop the increments those on high wages.

But Minister Brendan Howlin says he’s been advised that to do so using emergency financial legislation would be unfair.

A man in his late 20s has been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting in Dublin last night, in which a 16-year-old boy sustained serious injuries.

Shots were fired from a black coloured saloon car outside a house on Lismore Road in Crumlin at around 9 o’clock.

The Justice Minister Alan Shatter is describing last night’s gun attack as callous.

Gardai – who are trying to determine if the victim was the intended target – this afternoon arrested a man in his late 20s and he’s being held at Crumlin Garda station.

A 56 year old Co Tipperary woman whose breast cancer was misdiagnosed 3 times is looking for damages in the High Court.

Olive Fahey of Rahinch, Littleton, Thurles is suing Barringtons Hospital in Limerick, the HSE, and various medical professionals for negligence.

Her case has prompted 2 reports ”“ one, concluded there was significant error by two medical practitioners at University Hospital Galway where the breast tissue samples were sent for analysis.
