‘Toto’ Schillaci has apologised for knocking Ireland out of the World Cup in Italia 90.
For many Irish people, it was a sporting moment like no other in the history of the nation.
Ireland had defied expectations and made it through to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup.
The result was a 1-0 victory for Italy, with Toto Schillaci’s goal ending Ireland’s hopes of World Cup glory.
33 years later, people still bump into the man from Palermo and recognise him from that moment.
This week he is in Ireland and keen to reminisce about sporting glory; speaking to The Hard Shoulder, Schillaci said he was “very, very happy” to be in Dublino where so many people know him.
“You remember me?
“I’m very, very sorry but I play for Italia.”
