Tributes are pouring in for a Waterford father of four who has died while on holiday on the Spanish island of Majorca.

Michael Grant died suddenly whilst on holiday with family and friends in Magaluf.

The 45-year-old physiotherapist was well-known in local sporting circles for his work with St. Joseph’s Football Club - where he worked as a youth coach – and Mount Sion GAA Club.

In a statement online, St Joseph’s said he was “more than just a coach” to everyone involved with the club.

“Michael was an integral part of our community and his absence will be profoundly felt,” it said.

“He was not just a coach but a mentor and a friend to all the children and adult members at St Joseph’s.

“More recently, his dedication, passion, and love for the kids were evident in everything he did. He cherished every one of them, and I’m sure you will all agree that his impact was immeasurable.”

Meanwhile, FAI Waterford described Michael as a “brilliant club and family man with a great passion for helping young kids enjoy the beautiful game”.

“He was instrumental in establishing St Joseph’s back into kids’ football after many years without underage teams.

“Always very friendly with a big smile on his face he always had different ideas and looking for ways to help the club.

“A massive loss for his family and his club. Our condolences to everyone at this very difficult time.”

Johnville FC also offered its condolences to the Grant family, noting that Michael “put in unbelievable work” with the young players he was coaching.

“We had the pleasure of organising many a blitz between our academies over the last couple of years with Michael and you could feel the enthusiasm and love he had for his job of working with the kids up there,” it said.

“He will be truly missed.”

Funeral details have yet to be announced.
