Donald Trump has arrived at a Federal Court in Miami to face charges of mishandling classified information.
It is the first time in the history of the United States that a former or current head of state has faced federal charges.
It is alleged that after he departed office in 2021 Mr Trump retained a number of classified files and obstructed the Federal Government in its efforts to retrieve them.
Mr Trump pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges.
On his way to the courtroom, Mr Trump posted a number of messages on his Truth Social platform, including one that said, "One of the saddest days in the history of our country. We are a nation in decline!!!"
Mr Trump was spared the ignominy of having his mugshot taken but he is expected to have been fingerprinted and had a DNA sample taken.
In April, Mr Trump was charged in a New York State court of paying hush money during the 2016 US Presidential Election to a woman he had an affair with.
He denies all charges.
Mr Trump has announced his attention to stand in next year's Presidential election and polls suggest he will secure the Republican nomination.
