Donald Trump has been charged with mishandling classified documents.

It is the second time this year the former US President has been charged with a crime; in April, Mr Trump was charged with 34 felonies relating to allegations he paid hush money to a porn star in order to keep their affair secret during the 2016 President Election. He denies wrongdoing.

This week’s charges relate to documents seized by the FBI from Mr Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida last year - about 100 of which were classified.

Outgoing US Presidents are expected to turn over all official documents - which are considered federal property.

However, several months after he left office in January 2021, officials realised that some were missing - including correspondence between Mr Trump and his predecessor Barack Obama and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

If Mr Trump is convicted of mishandling the documents, it is possible he could spend time in prison.

"I have been summoned to appear at the Federal Courthouse in Miami on Tuesday, at 3 PM," Mr Trump wrote on the Truth Social social media platform.

"I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any sitting President in the History of our Country, and is currently leading, by far, all Candidates, both Democrat and Republican, in Polls of the 2024 Presidential Election.

“I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!"

Mr Trump is the front runner for the Republican nomination in the 2024 US Presidential Election.

Last month, a civil court found he sexually abused a woman in a New York department store in the 1990s. Mr Trump has lodged an appeal against the verdict.
