Donald Trump’s second term as US President is "going to be terrible" for many in the US, Jonathan Healy has claimed.

Later today, Donald Trump will become the 47th President of the United States following a swearing-in ceremony.

On Newstalk Breakfast, presenter Jonathan Healy said a second Trump presidency is bad news for many people in the US.

"It’s going to be terrible for many people in the US – others are going to find it great," he said.

"If you are a migrant - particularly a migrant of colour - this is a worrying time."

Jonathan cited the Trump administration policy which separated migrant children from their parents and in some cases, imprisoned children in cages at the US-Mexico border.

"He is going to do some pretty terrible things and he is going to gloss over them by pretending he is good at solving the issue on TikTok," Jonathan said.

"The rest of the world just has to hold its nerve for four more years and then hopefully we’ll have a post-Trump era - we thought we had it, but we didn’t.

"Remember children in cages at the border? He'll do something like that again."

Co-presenter Ciara Kelly said she believes there is "a lot of hysteria about Trump".

"I don't like Trump, I don't like him as a man - I wouldn't have voted for him, but more than half of voters obviously endorse Trump," she said.

"Divisiveness comes from two sides - America is an ally of ours.

"It is an ally that is very necessary that helped us during our own troubles with the peace process."

Ciara said she thinks some criticism of Donald Trump is "about spin".

"Lots of people have different opinions and we need to start respecting them and try to understand them," she said.

Donald Trump's inauguration will take place at 4pm Irish time.
