Turkey has shot down a Syrian plane in a border region between the two countries. Syria calims the plane was in Syrain airspace at the time it was shot down, and has described the act as “blatant aggression”.
Turkey Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told supporters at a rally in northwest Turkey:
"A Syrian plane violated our airspace.
"Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? Because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard."
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said the plane crashed in Syrian territory:"Turkish air defences targeted a Syrian fighter bomber as it struck areas of the northern province of Latakia. The plane caught fire and crashed in Syrian territory."
Syrian state television reports that the pilot ejected from the plane.
The incident is reported to have happened in an area that has seen fighting between rebels and government forces.
