The social media platform Twitter says it is to trial a new edit button in the coming months.
The company says it has been working on the idea since last year, and will be testing it to see "what works, what doesn't, and what's possible."
After putting out an initial tweet about the idea on April 1st, the company added on Tuesday: "We weren’t joking".
Head of consumer product at Twitter, Jay Sullivan, says this is the most requested feature from users.
"We’ve been exploring how to build an Edit feature in a safe manner since last year and plan to begin testing it within Twitter Blue Labs in the coming months.
"Edit has been the most requested Twitter feature for many years.
"People want to be able to fix (sometimes embarrassing) mistakes, typos and hot takes in the moment.
"They currently work around this by deleting and tweeting again.
"Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation.
"Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.
"Therefore, it will take time and we will be actively seeking input and adversarial thinking in advance of launching Edit.
"We will approach this feature with care and thoughtfulness and we will share updates as we go."
He also says this is "just one feature" being considered to give people more choice and control.
The announcement comes just days after Elon Musk took a 9.2% stake in Twitter.
This move makes the Tesla CEO the company's largest shareholder.
Mr Musk also ran a Twitter poll on Tuesday, asking users 'Do you want an edit button?' - which found 73.6% of people who voted did.

But Twitter is rebuking that the idea came from here, saying: "No, we didn’t get the idea from a poll".
now that everyone is asking…
yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year!
no, we didn’t get the idea from a poll 😉
