Two elderly people have died in a car crash in Kilmacrennan, County Donegal. 

The two-car crash happened at 11.50pm yesterday evening on the N56 in Kilmacrennan.

The driver of one of the cars and the woman he was travelling with, both in their 70s, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the second car, a woman in her 40s, was taken to hospital and treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The coroner has been notified and post-mortem examinations will be carried out.

The road was closed overnight and Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will carry out an examination this morning.

Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are urging any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have camera footage.
