Two elderly sisters are recovering in hospital after suffering suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at their Cork home.

Neighbours who were concerned for the women alerted gardaí. Officers found the women, aged 82 and 92, unconscious on the floor of their home in Blarney Street, Cork earlier today.

Gardaí said if it had not been for the neighbours checking on the women, they could have died.

The two sisters are now being treated at Cork University Hospital.

Two gardaí who attended the scene also needed medical attention after inhaling the fumes, thought to have come from a cooker.

Gardaí are reminding people to check on elderly neighbours over the winter.
