Two men have been found liable for the Omagh bombing following a landmark civil action at Belfast High Court.

29 people including a woman pregnant with twins died in the blast in 1998 and more than 200 were injured.

No-one has ever been criminally convicted over the attack. But today relatives won their civil claim against Colm Murphy from Co. Louth and Seamus Daly from Co. Monaghan.

Back in 2009 Mr. Murphy and Mr. Daly along with two others were held responsible in the initial civil action taken by some of the families.

Retrial ordered after original case

Along with Real IRA chief Michael McKevitt and Co. Louth republican Liam Campbell the men were ordered to pay stg£1.6 million in damages.

Mr. McKevitt is serving a 20-year prison sentence for directing terrorism and Mr. Campbell recently successfully fought extradition proceedings to Lithuania on arms smuggling charges. They both failed in bids to overturn the Omagh civil judgment.

They are now seeking to have their case heard in the European Court of Human Rights.

Mr. Murphy and Mr. Daly had been ordered to face a re-trial after they successfully appealed a finding of liability against them in the original case in the Belfast High Court.

But their second trial delivered the same outcome with Mr. Justice John Gillen ruling the men were responsible for the 1998 Real IRA atrocity.

Michael Gallagher lost his son Aidan in the tragedy and is spokesperson for the Omagh Victims Group.
