The car had come to officers' attention after they set up a checkpoint in the area.

The woman was taken to the Mater hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The State Pathologist will carry out the post mortem this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the driver, a man (26), was taken to Beaumont hospital where he remains in a critical condition. A second passenger - a man in his 20s - is in a stable condition at St James' Hospital.

Because it was involved in a chase with a garda car, it has been referred to GSOC for investigation, in accordance with section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act (2005).

The crash happened at the junction of the Malahide Road and the Clontarf Road.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission on 1890 600 800.

Elsewhere, a man (21) has died after a seperate overnight car crash near Brittas in Co. Dublin.
