A special critical incident response will be implemented in a County Galway school after two pupils died in a road traffic accident.
14-year-olds Lukas Joyce and Kirsty Bohan died on Easter Monday after the car they were in hit a tree in Glennagarraun, Headford.
There were four people in the car and Lucas was pronounced dead at the scene; the other three were taken to University Hospital Galway, where Kirsty was pronounced dead.
The other two, who are also teenagers, were treated in hospital for injuries as well.
“There’s a dark cloud over the whole area,” Cllr Andrew Reddington said.
“For example, the main school there in Headford, Presentation College, all these kids would have been in that school and would have known each other and would have been friends.
“I want to take this opportunity to say to the families that we’re all thinking of you and we’re very sorry for the loss of their children and, indeed, the community will rally behind you.”
All staff and pupils at Presentation College in Headford will be offered specialist counselling.
An Garda Síochána has appealed for witnesses of the collision to contact them.
