A cyclist killed in a collision with a car in Dublin on Sunday has been named as father-of-three John Walsh.
He is the second member of the UCD Cycling Club to die on the road in Ireland in less than a year.
Gardaí say the collision happened on the Malahide Road in Kinsealy shortly before 9:30am on Sunday morning.
Mr Walsh was taken to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries and was pronounced dead later in the day.
'Deepest sorrow'
In a statement online, the UCD Cycling Club offered its sincere condolences to Mr Walsh’s wife and family.
“John has been in the club many years and was a crucial part of the club’s activities, especially during his time as a student when he was club captain and had taken out his licence to race again in the club colours this year,” it said.
“We will deeply miss John who was always to be seen ripping up the corners of Mondello on a Tuesday night.
“Our sincere condolences to John’s wife, children, family and friends.
“May the wind be always at your back, RIP.”
Mr Walsh’s death comes just 10 months after the club lost Gabriele ‘Gabby’ Glodenyte to a collision with a car near Garristown in north County Dublin.
At the time, the club said the loss of the champion cyclist had left an “indescribable void within the cycling community and beyond”.
“Gabby’s warmth, kindness, and eternal smile will forever be etched in our memories,” it said.
“We will miss the joy she brought to us on and off the bike, her enthusiasm for training together, and her support for Irish women’s racing.”
Collision
Gardaí are continuing to investigate the collision that killed Mr Walsh and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
They are particularly interested in talking to road users who were in the area at the time and may have dash-cam footage.
