The UK Prime Minister is set to be fined over lockdown parties held at 10 Downing Street.

The Metropolitan Police has sent fixed penalty notice to Boris Johnson and to the British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak.

They are part of a series of fines sent to staff who attended the parties, held while COVID restrictions were in place in the UK during 2020 and 2021.

UK Labour has this afternoon called for both men to immediately resign.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has asked for the UK Parliament to be recalled for a vote of confidence in Mr Johnson.

Lockdown parties

The 12 events investigated by the police took place over eight separate dates and include a 'bring your own booze' event in the Downing Street garden on 20 May 2020 - organised by Mr Johnson’s principal private secretary.

The controversy led to several Tory MPs calling for their Prime Minister’s resignation; however, some have changed their stance since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

It comes after police launched an investigation into 12 Whitehall events where restrictions might have been breached during the pandemic.

Investigation

As part of their investigation UK police sent formal legal questionnaires to around 100 Downing Street and Whitehall staff members.

They then carried out interviews based on the responses.

Scotland Yard launched its investigation following the conclusion of the internal government inquiry led by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

A restricted version of her report was published at the end of January, but many details were removed so as not to compromise the police investigation.

It is unclear whether the full report will now be published.
