A UK-based scientist has been awarded a Nobel prize for his work discovering what's been described as the brain's 'GPS system'.

John O'Keefe and two other researchers worked out how it knows where we are - and how it handles making journeys.

It is thought their discovery could help understand diseases like Alzheimer's in future.

The site has announced that this is a massive step forward in understanding how the brain works: "The discovery of the brain’s positioning system represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of how ensembles of specialized cells work together to execute higher cognitive functions."

"It has opened new avenues for understanding other cognitive processes, such as memory, thinking and planning."

Professor O’Keefe is to receive an honorary doctorate from University College Cork (UCC), and will also be guest speaker at a major symposium organised by UCC’s Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, ahead of the ceremony on December 5th.

His father hailed from Newmarket in Co Cork, and still has family living in the area today.
