There are times when you read something and you cannot help but think...

HA! Is this really adding to the debate? Will this help anyone?

That was my reaction to this blog extolling the joys of accessible Dublin.

The headline caught my eye first. Had I read it right? Had I gone into some type of suspended animation and woke up in some utopian vision where narrow physical access had become a reality? Is that really the Dublin I know?

Let’s start with the pictures; one of the most earth-shattering facts Bridget tells us is Dublin has loads of bridges and to illustrate this why not choose the Ha’penny one, known as symbol of the city.

Famed by generations of parents dragging up buggies and wheelchair users looking longingly at it... Good call there Bridget. You did mention its steps to be fair.

And then there’s a lovely stock cheery pic of Bridget on the boardwalk. Now would you tell anyone to use the boardwalk? Unless they were looking to, ahem, engage in certain commercial transactions.

Moving into Templebar. Ah yes it might be a bit of a bone shaker indeed, but I suppose the unique lubricant, regurgitated black stuff, will grease those wheels and act as a wonderful hand cream.

Trains, planes and automobiles.  I don’t use a wheelchair but I know the gap between platforms and the DART is a joke. That’s if you can get into the stations in the first place...

Those shiny tour buses? Well maybe they do have access, but the best views are from the upper deck... oops.

Then there is the value for money ode. Hello?  For self styled ‘baby boomers’ who probably have a comfortable existence, it might just be okay. If you’re disabled on a budget, well that’s a whole article in itself.

The blog is filled with so many holes that for a disabled traveller it’s pretty useless. In the coming weeks, Newstalk will be returning to the subject with a more realistic overview of the city.

Watch this space.
