I know what you’re going to say. Moyes won a match. Hey ho. Enda got a prom deal and we’re still in a hole.

Undaunted will not be moved from his position outlined on Wednesday. Their greyness is unbounded.

What grey men really don’t need are vibrant folk who say it like it is and take no prisoners. Step forward Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar. You have probably heard what he said about the whistleblowers but here it is again.

Close listening will show you that our Leo is reading these words. They are not off the cuff. Ministerial speeches are something I know a bit about. In a former life I was a lowly civil servant lucky enough to write the first draft of a speech.

Here is how it works.

Whatever section of a minister’s department that handles the policy the minister is talking about puts together a first draft. We are talking about pasting whatever is the relevant piece of government policy into the script. This draft goes up through layers of management to an Assistant Secretary to sign off. Throw in the relevant press office and bingo! You have a speech.

The key word here is: department. Whatever is written down is Departmental policy.

Which brings us back to Leo Varadkar. A great deal of the commentary has focussed on Varadkar and how he has knifed Shatter and Callinan but I would suggest that this spat has just gone up a level.

We have a whole Transport department, who happen to have a very large interest in penalty points, putting it up to those who police the system. Go figure.

At least we have Enda at the helm to steer us away from that little rock. Eh, maybe not.

Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy ride and whoever crashes here will be way over their penalty points level.
